The NIV 365 Day Devotional
Disciplined Training Leads to Holiness
Paul’s words to Timothy communicate a very important lesson about pursuing godliness and holiness: it takes intentional, disciplined effort. When Paul says, “train yourself to be godly” (1Ti 4:7), the word train translates the Greek word gymnazō. The English word gymnasium derives from this word, helping us see Paul’s point. Just as we go to the gym to get physically fit, we must discipline ourselves to become spiritually fit. In fact, Paul says, physical fitness is only of some value, but spiritual fitness (“godliness”) holds value for both the present life and the life to come.
The point is that holiness and godliness won’t happen by accident; to be godly requires disciplined training. Paul frequently uses athletic imagery to describe the Christian life (e.g., 1Co 9:24–27; Php 3:13–14). Peter urges us to “make every effort” to put on Christian character (2Pe 1:5). And the author of Hebrews says it simply: “make every effort . . . to be holy” (Heb 12:14). We need a workout plan for godliness.
We need regular exercises like prayer, Bible study, worship and regular fellowship and accountability with other Christians to help us remain connected to Jesus, learn his word, put off sin and grow in virtue. It takes wise, disciplined, intentional effort.
