A Prayer for the Overthrow of the Wicked.
10 Why (A)do You stand afar off, O Lord?
Why (B)do You hide [a]Yourself in times of trouble?
2 In (C)pride the wicked [b]hotly pursue the afflicted;
[c]Let them be (D)caught in the plots which they have devised.
3 For the wicked (E)boasts of his (F)heart’s desire,
And [d]the greedy man curses and (G)spurns the Lord.
4 The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, (H)does not seek Him.
All his [e]thoughts are, “(I)There is no God.”
5 His ways [f](J)prosper at all times;
Your judgments are on high, (K)out of his sight;
As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.
6 He says to himself, “(L)I will not be moved;
[g]Throughout all generations (M)I will not be in adversity.”
7 His (N)mouth is full of curses and deceit and (O)oppression;
(P)Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.
8 He sits in the (Q)lurking places of the villages;
In the hiding places he (R)kills the innocent;
His eyes [h]stealthily watch for the [i](S)unfortunate.
9 He lurks in a hiding place as (T)a lion in his [j]lair;
He (U)lurks to catch (V)the afflicted;
He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his (W)net.
10 He [k]crouches, he [l]bows down,
And the [m]unfortunate fall [n]by his mighty ones.
11 He (X)says to himself, “God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it.”
12 Arise, O Lord; O God, (Y)lift up Your hand.
(Z)Do not forget the afflicted.
13 Why has the wicked (AA)spurned God?
He has said to himself, “You will not require it.”
14 You have seen it, for You have beheld (AB)mischief and vexation to [o]take it into Your hand.
The [p](AC)unfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the (AD)helper of the orphan.
15 (AE)Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
[q](AF)Seek out his wickedness until You find none.
16 The Lord is (AG)King forever and ever;
(AH)Nations have perished from His land.
17 O Lord, You have heard the (AI)desire of the [r]humble;
You will (AJ)strengthen their heart, (AK)You will incline Your ear
18 To [s]vindicate the (AL)orphan and the (AM)oppressed,
So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause (AN)terror.
The Lord a Refuge and Defense.

11 In the Lord I (AO)take refuge;
How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your (AP)mountain;
2 For, behold, the wicked (AQ)bend the bow,
They [t](AR)make ready their arrow upon the string
To (AS)shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
3 If the (AT)foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”
4 The Lord is in His (AU)holy temple; the [u]Lord’s (AV)throne is in heaven;
His (AW)eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
5 The Lord (AX)tests the righteous and (AY)the wicked,
And the one who loves violence His soul hates.
6 Upon the wicked He will (AZ)rain [v]snares;
(BA)Fire and brimstone and (BB)burning wind will be the portion of (BC)their cup.
7 For the Lord is (BD)righteous, (BE)He loves [w]righteousness;
The upright will (BF)behold His face.

12 Help, Lord, for (BG)the godly man ceases to be,
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
2 They (BH)speak [y]falsehood to one another;
With (BI)flattering [z]lips and with a double heart they speak.
3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
The tongue that (BJ)speaks great things;
4 Who (BK)have said, “With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are [aa]our own; who is lord over us?”
5 “Because of the (BL)devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now (BM)I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will (BN)set him in the safety for which he longs.”
6 The (BO)words of the Lord are pure words;
As silver (BP)tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.
7 You, O Lord, will keep them;
You will (BQ)preserve him from this generation forever.
8 The (BR)wicked strut about on every side
When [ab](BS)vileness is exalted among the sons of men.
Prayer for Help in Trouble.

13 How long, O Lord? Will You (BT)forget me forever?
How long (BU)will You hide Your face from me?
2 How long shall I (BV)take counsel in my soul,
Having (BW)sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?
3 (BX)Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
(BY)Enlighten my eyes, or I will (BZ)sleep the sleep of death,
4 And my enemy will (CA)say, “I have overcome him,”
And (CB)my adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken.
5 But I have (CC)trusted in Your lovingkindness;
My heart shall (CD)rejoice in Your salvation.
6 I will (CE)sing to the Lord,
Because He has (CF)dealt bountifully with me.
Folly and Wickedness of Men.

14 The fool has (CG)said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they have committed abominable [ac]deeds;
There is (CH)no one who does good.
2 The Lord has (CI)looked down from heaven upon the sons of men
To see if there are any who [ad](CJ)understand,
Who (CK)seek after God.
3 They have all (CL)turned aside, together they have become corrupt;
There is (CM)no one who does good, not even one.
4 Do all the workers of wickedness (CN)not know,
Who (CO)eat up my people as they eat bread,
And (CP)do not call upon the Lord?
5 There they are in great dread,
For God is with the (CQ)righteous generation.
6 You would put to shame the counsel of the afflicted,
But the Lord is his (CR)refuge.
7 Oh, that (CS)the salvation of Israel [ae]would come out of Zion!
When the Lord [af](CT)restores His captive people,
Jacob will rejoice, Israel will be glad.

15 O Lord, who may [ag]abide (CU)in Your tent?
Who may dwell on Your (CV)holy hill?
2 He who (CW)walks with integrity, and works righteousness,
And (CX)speaks truth in his heart.
3 He (CY)does not slander [ah]with his tongue,
Nor (CZ)does evil to his neighbor,
Nor (DA)takes up a reproach against his friend;
4 In [ai]whose eyes a reprobate is despised,
But [aj]who (DB)honors those who fear the Lord;
He (DC)swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 He (DD)does not put out his money [ak]at interest,
Nor (DE)does he take a bribe against the innocent.

16 (DG)Preserve me, O God, for (DH)I take refuge in You.
2 [am]I said to the Lord, “You are [an]my Lord;
I (DI)have no good besides You.”
3 As for the [ao](DJ)saints who are in the earth,
[ap]They are the majestic ones (DK)in whom is all my delight.
4 The [aq](DL)sorrows of those who have [ar]bartered for another god will be multiplied;
I shall not pour out their drink offerings of (DM)blood,
Nor will I (DN)take their names upon my lips.
5 The Lord is the (DO)portion of my inheritance and my (DP)cup;

6 The (DR)lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Indeed, my heritage is (DS)beautiful to me.
7 I will bless the Lord who has (DT)counseled me;

Because He is (DX)at my right hand, (DY)I will not be shaken.

Nor will You [au](ED)allow Your [av]Holy One to [aw]undergo decay.
11 You will make known to me (EE)the path of life;
In (EF)Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are (EG)pleasures forever.
Prayer for Protection against Oppressors.

17 Hear a (EH)just cause, O Lord, (EI)give heed to my cry;
(EJ)Give ear to my prayer, which is not from (EK)deceitful lips.
2 Let (EL)my [ax]judgment come forth from Your presence;
Let Your eyes look with (EM)equity.
3 You have (EN)tried my heart;
You have visited me by night;
You have (EO)tested me and (EP)You find [ay]nothing;
I have (EQ)purposed that my mouth will not transgress.
4 As for the deeds of men, (ER)by the word of Your lips
I have kept from the (ES)paths of the violent.
5 My (ET)steps have held fast to Your [az]paths.
My (EU)feet have not slipped.
6 I have (EV)called upon You, for You will answer me, O God;
(EW)Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.
7 (EX)Wondrously show Your lovingkindness,
O (EY)Savior of those who take refuge [ba]at Your right hand
From those who rise up against them.
8 Keep me as [bb]the (EZ)apple of the eye;
Hide me (FA)in the shadow of Your wings
9 From the (FB)wicked who despoil me,
My (FC)deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They have (FD)closed their [bc]unfeeling heart,
With their mouth they (FE)speak proudly.
11 They have now (FF)surrounded us in our steps;
They set their eyes (FG)to cast us down to the ground.
12 He is (FH)like a lion that is eager to tear,
And as a young lion (FI)lurking in hiding places.
13 (FJ)Arise, O Lord, confront him, (FK)bring him low;
(FL)Deliver my soul from the wicked with (FM)Your sword,
14 From men with (FN)Your hand, O Lord,
From men [bd]of the world, (FO)whose portion is in this life,
And whose belly You (FP)fill with Your treasure;
They are satisfied with children,
And leave their abundance to their babes.
15 As for me, I shall (FQ)behold Your face in righteousness;
(FR)I will be satisfied [be]with Your (FS)likeness when I awake.
The Lord Praised for Giving Deliverance.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, [bf]who spoke to the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said,
18 “I love You, O Lord, (FT)my strength.”
2 The Lord is (FU)my [bg]rock and (FV)my fortress and my (FW)deliverer,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My (FX)shield and the (FY)horn of my salvation, my (FZ)stronghold.
3 I call upon the Lord, who is (GA)worthy to be praised,
And I am (GB)saved from my enemies.
4 The (GC)cords of death encompassed me,
And the (GD)torrents of [bh]ungodliness [bi]terrified me.
5 The (GE)cords of [bj]Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
6 In my (GF)distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice (GG)out of His temple,
And my (GH)cry for help before Him came into His ears.
7 Then the (GI)earth shook and quaked;
And the (GJ)foundations of the mountains were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
8 Smoke went up [bk]out of His nostrils,
And (GK)fire from His mouth devoured;
Coals were kindled by it.
9 He (GL)bowed the heavens also, and came down
With thick (GM)darkness under His feet.
10 He rode upon a (GN)cherub and flew;
And He sped upon the (GO)wings of the wind.
11 He made (GP)darkness His hiding place, (GQ)His [bl]canopy around Him,
Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 From the (GR)brightness before Him passed His thick clouds,
Hailstones and (GS)coals of fire.
13 The Lord also (GT)thundered in the heavens,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He (GU)sent out His arrows, and scattered them,
And lightning flashes in abundance, and [bm]routed them.
15 Then the (GV)channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were [bn]laid bare
At Your (GW)rebuke, O Lord,
At the blast of the (GX)breath of Your nostrils.
16 He (GY)sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of (GZ)many waters.
17 He (HA)delivered me from my strong enemy,
And from those who hated me, for they were (HB)too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in (HC)the day of my calamity,
But (HD)the Lord was my stay.
19 He brought me forth also into a (HE)broad place;
He rescued me, because (HF)He delighted in me.
20 The Lord has (HG)rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the (HH)cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
21 For I have (HI)kept the ways of the Lord,
And have (HJ)not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all (HK)His ordinances were before me,
And I did not put away His (HL)statutes from me.
23 I was also [bo](HM)blameless with Him,
And I (HN)kept myself from my iniquity.
24 Therefore the Lord has (HO)recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes.
25 With (HP)the kind You show Yourself kind;
With the [bp]blameless (HQ)You show Yourself blameless;
26 With the pure You show Yourself (HR)pure,
And with the crooked (HS)You show Yourself [bq]astute.
27 For You (HT)save an afflicted people,
But (HU)haughty eyes You abase.
28 For You (HV)light my lamp;
The Lord my God (HW)illumines my darkness.
29 For by You I can [br](HX)run upon a troop;
And by my God I can (HY)leap over a wall.
30 As for God, His way is [bs](HZ)blameless;
The (IA)word of the Lord is tried;
He is a (IB)shield to all who take refuge in Him.
31 For (IC)who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a (ID)rock, except our God,
32 The God who (IE)girds me with strength
And [bt]makes my way [bu](IF)blameless?
33 He (IG)makes my feet like hinds’ feet,
And (IH)sets me upon my high places.
34 He (II)trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can (IJ)bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have also given me (IK)the shield of Your salvation,
And Your (IL)right hand upholds me;
And (IM)Your [bv]gentleness makes me great.
36 You (IN)enlarge my steps under me,
And my [bw](IO)feet have not slipped.
37 I (IP)pursued my enemies and overtook them,
And I did not turn back (IQ)until they were consumed.
38 I shattered them, so that they were (IR)not able to rise;
They fell (IS)under my feet.
39 For You have (IT)girded me with strength for battle;
You have [bx](IU)subdued under me those who rose up against me.
40 You have also made my enemies (IV)turn their backs to me,
And I [by](IW)destroyed those who hated me.
41 They cried for help, but there was (IX)none to save,
Even to the Lord, but (IY)He did not answer them.
42 Then I beat them fine as the (IZ)dust before the wind;
I emptied them out as the mire of the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the (JA)contentions of the people;
You have placed me as (JB)head of the nations;
A (JC)people whom I have not known serve me.
44 As soon as they hear, they obey me;
Foreigners [bz](JD)submit to me.
45 Foreigners (JE)fade away,
And (JF)come trembling out of their [ca]fortresses.
46 The Lord (JG)lives, and blessed be (JH)my rock;
And exalted be (JI)the God of my salvation,
47 The God who (JJ)executes vengeance for me,
And (JK)subdues peoples under me.
48 He (JL)delivers me from my enemies;
Surely You (JM)lift me above those who rise up against me;
You rescue me from the (JN)violent man.
49 Therefore I will (JO)give thanks to You among the nations, O Lord,
And I will (JP)sing praises to Your name.
50 He gives great [cb](JQ)deliverance to His king,
And shows lovingkindness to (JR)His anointed,
To David and (JS)his [cc]descendants forever.
The Works and the Word of God.

19 The (JT)heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their (JU)expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
2 Day to (JV)day pours forth speech,
And (JW)night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
4 Their [cd](JX)line has gone out through all the earth,
And their utterances to the end of the world.
In them He has (JY)placed a tent for the sun,
5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber;
It rejoices as a strong man to run his course.
6 Its (JZ)rising is from [ce]one end of the heavens,
And its circuit to the [cf]other end of them;
And there is nothing hidden from its heat.
7 (KA)The law of the Lord is [cg](KB)perfect, (KC)restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is (KD)sure, making (KE)wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are (KF)right, (KG)rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is (KH)pure, (KI)enlightening the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are (KJ)true; they are (KK)righteous altogether.
10 They are more desirable than (KL)gold, yes, than much fine gold;
(KM)Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them (KN)Your servant is warned;
In keeping them there is great (KO)reward.
12 Who can (KP)discern his errors? (KQ)Acquit me of (KR)hidden faults.
13 Also keep back Your servant (KS)from presumptuous sins;
Let them not (KT)rule over me;
Then I will be [ch](KU)blameless,
And I shall be acquitted of (KV)great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and (KW)the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, (KX)my rock and my (KY)Redeemer.

20 May the Lord answer you (KZ)in the day of trouble!
May the (LA)name of the (LB)God of Jacob set you securely on high!
2 May He send you help (LC)from the sanctuary
And (LD)support you from Zion!
3 May He (LE)remember all your meal offerings
And (LF)find your burnt offering [ci]acceptable! [cj]Selah.
4 May He grant you your (LG)heart’s desire
And (LH)fulfill all your [ck]counsel!
5 [cl]We will (LI)sing for joy over your [cm]victory,
And in the name of our God we will (LJ)set up our banners.
May the Lord (LK)fulfill all your petitions.
6 Now (LL)I know that the Lord saves His anointed;
He will (LM)answer him from His holy heaven

7 Some [co]boast in chariots and some in (LO)horses,

Strong bulls of (NK)Bashan have encircled me.

As a ravening and a roaring (NM)lion.
14 I am (NN)poured out like water,
And all my (NO)bones are out of joint;
My (NP)heart is like wax;
It is melted within [dl]me.
15 My (NQ)strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And (NR)my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You (NS)lay me [dm]in the dust of death.
16 For (NT)dogs have surrounded me;
[dn]A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
[do]They (NU)pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
(NV)They look, they stare at me;
18 They (NW)divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.
19 But You, O Lord, (NX)be not far off;
O You my help, (NY)hasten to my assistance.
20 Deliver my [dp]soul from (NZ)the sword,
My (OA)only life from the [dq]power of the dog.
21 Save me from the (OB)lion’s mouth;
From the horns of the (OC)wild oxen You (OD)answer me.
22 I will (OE)tell of Your name to my brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.

All you [dr]descendants of Jacob, (OG)glorify Him,
And (OH)stand in awe of Him, all you [ds]descendants of Israel.
24 For He has (OI)not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;
Nor has He (OJ)hidden His face from him;
But (OK)when he cried to Him for help, He heard.
25 From You comes (OL)my praise in the great assembly;
I shall (OM)pay my vows before those who fear Him.
26 The [dt]afflicted will eat and (ON)be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will (OO)praise the Lord.
Let your (OP)heart live forever!
27 All the (OQ)ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the (OR)families of the nations will worship before [du]You.
28 For the (OS)kingdom is the Lord’s
And He (OT)rules over the nations.
29 All the [dv](OU)prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,
All those who (OV)go down to the dust will bow before Him,
Even he who [dw](OW)cannot keep his soul alive.
30 [dx](OX)Posterity will serve Him;
It will be told of the Lord to (OY)the coming generation.
31 They will come and (OZ)will declare His righteousness
To a people (PA)who will be born, that He has performed it.

A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my (PB)shepherd,
I [dy]shall (PC)not want.
2 He makes me lie down in (PD)green pastures;
He (PE)leads me beside [dz](PF)quiet waters.
3 He (PG)restores my soul;
He (PH)guides me in the [ea](PI)paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Even though I (PJ)walk through the [eb]valley of the shadow of death,
I (PK)fear no [ec]evil, for (PL)You are with me;
Your (PM)rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You (PN)prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

6 [ee]Surely (PQ)goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,

The King of Glory Entering Zion.

24 The (PS)earth is the Lord’s, and [eh]all it contains,
The (PT)world, and those who dwell in it.
2 For He has (PU)founded it upon the seas
And established it upon the rivers.
3 Who may (PV)ascend into the (PW)hill of the Lord?
And who may stand in His holy (PX)place?
4 He who has (PY)clean hands and a (PZ)pure heart,
Who has not (QA)lifted up his soul [ei]to falsehood
And has not (QB)sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive a (QC)blessing from the Lord
And [ej](QD)righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 [ek]This is the generation of those who (QE)seek Him,
